Legislators
file hundreds of bills during a session, often totaling more than a
thousand.
Obviously, most of these do not pass and of those that do
some are more important than others to the Catholic community. The 4
Catholic Bishops of Kentucky, after consultation with Conference staff and
members of the committees they appoint, direct staff to bring the voice of
the Catholic community to bear on particular bills. Determining which
bills to oppose, support, or simply watch is not a science, but involves
prudent judgment and decisions based not only on the importance of the
issue itself, but also on the amount of resources available to address the
issue as well as considering how likely is it to be successful. Issues
related to unborn human life and human dignity always demand attention. On
this page viewers will find links to those bills being actively worked by
the Catholic Conference. As time permits, this page and the pages linked
to it will be updated. We will try to provide sources of Catholic Social
Doctrine that relate to the legislation to help viewers understand why we
are engaged with a certain bill.
We
invite Kentucky's Catholics to work with us on these issues and take
advantage of raising our collective voice to proclaim Gospel values and
ask that these values guide our legislators to adopt public policies that
promote the common good.
