Items of Current Interest in Kentucky

August 20 - The Summer edition of our quarterly newsletter, WITNESS, is now available. Featured articles focus on poverty in Kentucky, do's and don'ts during an election year, child sexual abuse, Genesis and evolution, and others.

August 13 - Ed Monahan, Executive Director of CCK, has resigned to accept an appointment by Gov. Beshear to become the Public Advocate, overseeing an agency that provides legal counsel to the poor and indigent charged with committing crimes. Archbishop Kurtz said that he and Kentucky's other three bishops accepted Monahan's resignation with regret but are pleased to see him continuing in public service. "He has done a stellar job for the Catholic Conference of Kentucky," Kurtz said. "We will miss him tremendously." Read the Courier-Journal story here.

July 25 - New columns by all three of our regular commentary writers are now available on their WebPages. Click here to read these stimulating articles.

July 3 - Kentucky Bishops' Urge Political, but Not Partisan, Activity, Encourage Responsible Citizenship - This letter from Kentucky's four bishops gives guidance about political activity conducted by parishes or by those representing the Church. The IRS code has strict guidelines for non-profit groups regarding political activity and the Bishops demand these be followed. In the column to the right, there are links to more information on this important topic. Visit our Political Campaign Activity page for updates.

This page includes links to the USCCB's Faithful Citizenship website which has a wealth of information about this issue. Visit 2007 USCCB Political Activity Guidelines for Church Organizations for legal guidance.

January 28 - Reverence for Life: Conscience and Faithful Citizenship, a new pastoral statement from Kentucky's four Catholic Bishops, is now available online. Issued on the 35th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, the Bishops teach on the fundamental human rights issue of our day - the right to life of the unborn child. The statement emphasizes Church teaching on conscience formation and the moral responsibilities of Catholics as citizens.
